What is SHSMUN?
The Southern High School Model United Nations Conference (SHSMUN) is a Model UN conference organized by high schoolers for high schoolers. Unique to only SHSMUN, teenagers run the conference by writing topic papers and chairing their own committees. SHSMUN is a serious, well developed Model UN conference, where delegates participate in comprehensive debates in more than ten committees ranging from Disarmament to SHSMUN’s own General committee. SHSMUN’s delegates are expected to bring their best “game” by researching their countries’ positions, delivering speeches, and writing thorough resolutions that deliver solutions to their committee’s issues. It’s not all about the competition at SHSMUN, though. Delegates meet, debate, and befriend other high schoolers from across the state of Tennessee and southeastern United States. Located in the fabulous Chattanoogan Hotel, the conference is regularly complimented on its location, which is surrounded by the clean downtown area of Chattanooga. While most conferences are dropping General Assembly-where all committees come together to debate all resolutions, SHSMUN embraces General Assembly to promote leadership and public speaking skills among delegates. During the closing ceremony, one idea is on every delegate’s mind: I can’t wait for the next SHSMUN!
